(NSU NEWSROOM—Aug. 24, 2016)---Norfolk State University President and CEO Eddie N. Moore Jr. will be inaugurated as the university’s sixth president at 10 a.m. on Sept. 16 at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center. The Investiture ceremony is part of the university’s Founders Day celebration, an annual celebration of NSU’s founding.

Founders Day will mark Norfolk State’s 81st year as a higher education institution in Virginia. Dozens of activities are planned the week of Sept. 13-16 to celebrate NSU’s history including an 81-hour online giving campaign, Founders Day Ceremonial Walk, numerous student-led events and an Inaugural Bash featuring a carnival and fireworks. To cap off the week, an Inaugural Gala to honor President Moore’s inauguration is planned for 8 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall. Norfolk State Alumna and WVEC News Anchor Regina Mobley will serve as the event emcee.

At the gala, President Moore will provide the community with information about the NSU Presidential Scholars Fund, a merit-based initiative for students who have outstanding high school academic achievements. The program will provide first-year undergraduate students $10,000 per year for four years. The university will accept approximately 50 Presidential Scholars annually.

Moore has been at Norfolk State since September 2013. As NSU’s interim president, his direction and oversight of a cross-departmental effort led to the removal of Norfolk State from probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The president’s leadership has also led to an enrollment uptick at the university. The fall 2016-17 freshman enrollment is between 1,000 to 1,100 students, up from 475 freshman students one year ago. Also, the university has received more than 500 academic transfers which will put NSU’s overall enrollment at more than 5,100 students.

Earlier this year, the Norfolk State University Board of Visitors finalized a two-year contract with Moore to make him the president of NSU. In his first 100 days as president, Moore focused on three key strategic initiatives: improving the retention and graduation rates of students; increasing the enrollment of new students, and enhancing the culture of accountability at NSU. Moore has also initiated campus-wide strategic planning, an enterprise risk management assessment, and a brand planning effort to define and secure the university’s future direction.

Before his arrival to NSU, Moore served as president of St. Paul’s College from November 2011 through June 2012, and as president of Virginia State University from 1993-2010. Prior to his tenure at VSU, Moore was treasurer of the Commonwealth of Virginia, where he served on 18 state boards and had oversight authority for more than $20 billion of Virginia’s assets. Moore also served as comptroller at the College of William and Mary.

Moore has an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor of science in accounting from Pennsylvania State University. He is a certified public accountant in Texas and the Commonwealth of Virginia (inactive). Moore is married to Elisia Moore and has 5 children and 5 grandchildren.
