Norfolk State University Board of Visitors Summary of Board Actions

(NSU NEWSROOM—March 18, 2016)—The Norfolk State University Board of Visitors held its board meeting today and voted on actions that included the university’s tuition and fees for students for the 2016-17 academic year, the approval of two online degree programs and nominated and elected board officers.


The board approved online degree programs in tourism and hospitality management and general business, management information systems. They also reinstated a Master of Arts in Teaching Certification Program. The board also nominated and elected Dr. Byron L. Cherry Sr. as NSU Rector and Dr. Melvin T. Stith as Vice Rector. Both are graduates of Norfolk State.


On Thursday, the NSU Board of Visitors held its annual retreat in Virginia Beach and met to review board policies. The board discussed University business and participated in brand planning and strategic visioning sessions.  


In summary, the Board of Visitors approved:

    • BOV Policy #17 (2016) Weapons.

    • New BOV Policy #18 (2016) Participation in Board of Visitors Meetings in Event of a Personal Emergency, Certain Disabilities; or Distance from Meeting Location.

    • Board Meeting Schedule for 2016–17.

    • New Online Degree Programs:    

      • Bachelor of Science in Tourism and Hospitality Management

      • Bachelor of Science in General Business, Management Information Systems Concentration

    • Reinstatement of the Master of Arts in Teaching-Initial Teacher Certification Program.

    • Tuition, Room, Board and Fees for 2016-17.

    • Dec. 11, 2015, Board of Visitors Meeting Minutes.


    The next NSU Board of Visitors meeting will be held May 6, 2016.
