Norfolk State University Joins the Extreme Makeover Food Drive

Norfolk, Va.— Norfolk State University faculty, staff and students are joining the regional effort to collect more than 153 tons of non-perishable food for the Foodbank during the Extreme Food Drive now through February 5. The ABC Network's popular show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is in Hampton Roads to build a home for a deserving family. As a part of the project, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia has launched the Extreme Food Drive. This is the first time the highly rated reality series has been in the region.

"There has been an overwhelming response from the Norfolk State University community to participate in this effort. When the call for volunteers was disseminated, more than 200 students, faculty and staff signed up in one day,” said NSU Acting President Kim Luckes. "Although we didn't make it onto the building schedule, the food drive is way that we can all assist in this worthy effort.”

Norfolk State joins dozens of other organizations throughout the region collecting food in this effort. One out of six Americans faces the reality of hunger. Hunger is also a real problem right here in Hampton Roads. All throughout the year, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia serves thousands of families who struggle to feed their families.

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia has provided collection containers. For your convenience, the containers will be stationed in the following locations on NSU's campus:

  • Melvin & Patricia Stith Alumni House (Corprew Avenue)
  • Brambleton Community Outreach Center
  • Harrison B. Wilson Hall
  • NSU Virginia Beach Higher Education Center

The 10 Most Wanted Items that the Foodbank needs are:

  • Peanut Butter
  • Chunky Soups
  • Canned Meats
  • Canned Tuna
  • Canned Vegetables
  • Juice
  • Cereal
  • Macaroni & Cheese
