Commonwealth’s Secretary of Education to Speak to Graduates

Virginia Secretary of Education Dietra Trent will be the commencement speaker for Norfolk State University’s December 10 ceremony, which will be held on campus at Joseph G. Echols Hall. Trent will deliver the keynote address during the University’s fall commencement ceremony which is scheduled for 10 a.m. Nearly 600 students are expected to earn their college degrees.

Trent was appointed Secretary of Education by Governor McAuliffe in 2016. She had previously served as Deputy Secretary of Education. She also served as Deputy Secretary of Education in Governor Tim Kaine’s administration, and as Director of Constituent Services and Director of the Council on Human Rights under Governor Mark Warner. Dr. Trent earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice from Hampton University, and completed her master’s and doctoral degrees in Public Administration and Policy from Virginia Commonwealth University.

In addition to students who will earn their college diplomas, NSU will present more than 50 master’s and doctoral degrees to graduate-level students. Also during the ceremony, eight Army and two Navy ROTC students are expected to take the oath of commissioned officers for their respective military branches.
