Governor Appoints Three to NSU Board of Visitors

NSU NEWSROOM—June 3, 2015)---Governor Terry McAuliffe has appointed three new members to four-year terms on the Norfolk State University Board of Visitors. The newest board members are Ann A. Adams, Kenneth W. Crowder and Michael Helpinstill.         

Adams, of Virginia Beach, is the assistant vice president of human resources at Norfolk Southern Corp. She leads teams responsible for technical training, professional development, talent management, external recruitment, among other responsibilities at the company. Adams also serves on the Board of Directors for organizations that include Lead Virginia and VisitNorfolk.

Crowder, of Norfolk, is presiding elder, Norfolk District, Virginia Conference, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and is an Owner/Agent with State Farm Insurance. He currently serves on the City of Norfolk Retirement Board of Directors which oversees more than $800 million in retiree pension funds for the city. He also previously served on the Board of Trustees at Livingstone College in North Carolina.

Helpinstill, of Williamsburg, is vice president and chief financial officer of Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries. Helpinstill is responsible for business management functions, including accounting, financial reporting and planning, analysis, rates and budgets, and program cost control for the organization.

Gov. McAuliffe, appointed more than 50 members to university boards, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and the State Board for community colleges. In a news release earlier this week, the governor stated:

“Virginia has one of the best higher education systems on the globe and I am confident that these leaders will keep their schools moving forward as we work together to build a new Virginia economy.” 

Norfolk State University Interim President and CEO Eddie N. Moore, Jr. said that:

“The Norfolk State University family welcomes our three new Board of Visitors members and I look forward to working very closely with each of them to reposition the institution for great success.”

The terms for the new Board of Visitors members will begin on July 1 and continue through June 30, 2019.
