NSU Athletics Needs Your Support!

Below is a statement from NSU Athletics Director Marty L. Miller:

"I am seeking the assistance of all Spartan fans, friends and former student-athletes during the 2014-15 academic year. The Department of Athletics is requesting the cooperation and assistance of all supporters in its effort to strengthen the financial viability of the athletics program, not only during the current season, but also in years to come.

The NCAA is demanding greater accountability for academic success of student-athletes in the classroom. The NCAA has also legislated new mandates to enhance both the academic and athletic well-being of current and future student-athletes.

At Norfolk State University, we are attempting to meet the growing financial requirements of an intercollegiate sports program. We cannot meet these challenges without your assistance.

In an effort to improve funding during the 2014 football season, athletics changed the structure of tailgating to improve game attendance and increase the revenue for the football program. The new tailgating procedures were implemented to encourage fans to purchase game tickets in order to increase revenue for student-athletes to enroll in the summer bridge program, summer school, increase scholarship awards, improve graduation rates by awarding additional fifth-year scholarships (student-athletes that have completed their eligibility to compete but need one or two semesters to graduate), upgrade facilities and meet other permissible NCAA mandates. Our goal was not to change the tradition of tailgating but to meet the financial barriers confronting athletics.

With the loss of income due to the decline in enrollment this academic year, the Department of Athletics cannot achieve these goals without substantial financial support. Many of you can remember the role that Norfolk State University played in your life as a student and/or student-athlete and the impact it had in structuring the foundation for your future successes. Do you want to give back and lift up our student-athletes in their quest to achieve success in life? You have the opportunity to change the landscape of the athletics program at Norfolk State University. Will you?"
