Emergency Preparedness: Preparing the Community for Round Two-Hurricane Season in Full Swing

Friday, August 25, 2006
10:00 AM
Bozeman Education Building
Seminar Room-2nd Floor

Norfolk State University will host a community forum titled Emergency Preparedness: Preparing the Community for Round Two – Hurricane Season in Full Swing Friday, August 25 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Bozeman Education Building. The forum will take place in the second floor seminar room. Hui-Shan Walker, deputy coordinator of emergency management for the City of Chesapeake, will serve as the forum moderator.

Free and open to the public, the community forum series is designed to increase community awareness about current issues; assess socio-economic, political and environmental issues facing our society; integrate immediate strategies and proactive solutions into actions that will promote the welfare of the community and the University; engage stakeholders in building community involvement partnerships; and to promote NSU’s commitment of community service by providing information from faculty experts.

The expert panel members include the following:

  • Ron Keys, Director of Emergency Preparedness & Response, City of Norfolk
  • Mike Louder, Disaster Services Coordinator, American Red Cross – Southeast Virginia Chapter
  • Bill Sammler, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, NOAA’s National Weather Service, Wakefield, Va.

Geared toward community leaders, grassroots organizations, civic leaders, media representatives, religious organizations and other interested organizations; the forum will provide information on what all of us can do to prepare for hurricanes and other types of emergency situations. Participants will also be able to ask questions and get answers from experts in emergency management planning.

Due to limited seating, pre-registration is preferred. For more information or to register, call Meredythe Hutchinson at 823-8135.  All participants of the forum will be offered a discount for lunch at the faculty staff dining hall; entree one meat and two sides for $5.43 or salad bar for $3.67 including beverage.
